Iowa State researchers look at alternative crops for fuel production

alternatiive biofuel crop
Roger Hintz, assistant scientist, (left) and Ken Moore, professor of agronomy, compare two varieties of kenaf in an Iowa State University research plot near Ames. The crop usually is grown for industrial fiber, but also is a potential biomass crop.
Crops not routinely found on Iowa farms -- switchgrass, Indiangrass, big bluestem, eastern gamagrass, sweet sorghum, triticale, kenaf -- fill several research plots on an Iowa State University farm west of Ames.

"Our primary goal is to provide realistic alternatives for Iowa producers to diversify their cropping systems," said Ken Moore, agronomy professor. But he's quick to point out this isn't just about developing alternative crops, but also developing uses for the new crops. For instance, emerging markets for liquid fuels and other industrial products made from crop biomass offer opportunities.

James Monroe Capital announces ethanol plant valuations
Company
Monday, 28 August 2006

James Monroe Capital Corporation has announced that its newly updated, larger, plants will sell for $1.6 million or more, and be worth $8 million in the stock market at a conservative P/E ratio of 20.

Diversified Ethanol's Taylor Moffitt said, "We are ready to produce hundreds of these plants, and if we have our way we will own a piece of every one of them, and entirely own several for ourselves. MGPI, an ethanol stock, is at a P/E ratio of 50 as of 8/24. At a P/E ratio of 50, just one of these $1.6 million dollar plants, which only costs us $800,000 to build, would be worth $20 million in a public, reporting company. Even if the market goes down 60%, we are providing a lot of value to customers, and revenues only get better when fuel costs rise."

Researchers look at fast-growing trees as future energy source
Research

hybrid poplars

Purdue University researchers are using genetic tools in an effort to design trees that readily and inexpensively can yield the substances needed to produce alternative transportation fuel. The scientists are focused on a compound in cell walls called lignin that contributes to plants' structural strength, but which hinders extraction of cellulose. Cellulose is the sugar-containing component needed to make the alternative fuel ethanol.

The US Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research is funding a $1.4 million, three-year study by Purdue faculty members Clint Chapple, Richard Meilan and Michael Ladisch to determine ways to alter lignin and test whether the genetic changes affect the quality of plants used to produce biofuels. A hybrid poplar tree is the basis for the research that is part of the DOE's goal to replace 30 percent of the fossil fuel used annually in the United States for transportation with biofuels by 2030.
