Thailand partnership in $40-million biodiesel initiative

PTT Public Company, Thailand's state-owned oil firm, and Charoen Pokphand Group (CP), a leading agro-industrial and foods conglomerate, have signed an initial agreement to develop biodiesel, according to a  PTT senior official.

Dutch survey shows 90% of fleet vehicles can convert to biofuel

Over 50 fleets of vehicles totalling 4500 cars and trucks in three nothern Dutch provinces are being included in an extensive survey of fleet vehicles. The results of the first 30 fleet surveys were presented yesterday.

Bioro, Alco BioFuel plan 500,000-ton biofuel capacity in Belgium

Biofuel investors Bioro and Alco BioFuel plan to invest in Europe's largest biodiesel and ethanol production plants in the Gent region of Belgium. Over the next few months the federal government will decide which municipalities will host these plants.

Ethanol in China's 5-year energy plan

China is considering reforming its energy policy in order to reduce its reliance on imported oil and domestically produced, but heavily polluting, coal. The government plans instead to encourage the production and use of ethanol. Policymakers will make the decision at the end of 2006, and the decision is expected to include a compulsory percentage of ethanol in transport fuels.

Go ahead given for ethanol dehydration plant in the BVI

A permit to construct an ethanol dehydration facility on the island of St. Croix has been granted to GeoNet Ethanol. The state-of-the-art ethanol plant, with more than 100 million gallon a year dehydration capacity, will be supplied by Dedini Industrias de Base, Piracicaba, Brazil. Demar Ltd, Houston, TX, will provide the engineering, procurement, project management, and construction supervision services for the dehydration unit.

Partnership will help develop new energy crops

The John Innes Centre (JIC) has recently entered into a partnership with the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Energy (DOE) to study the genome of the grass Brachypodium as part of the Joint Genome Institute’s Community Sequencing Programme. The genetic information from this project will be used as a template for analysing the much larger and more complex genomes of wheat and barley which will accelerate progress towards improving food production and help develop sustainable production of biofuel from grass crops.
