Report: UK's Health & Safety Executive concludes biofuels pose no hazard to workers

A new report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) concludes that Britain’s existing health and safety system is flexible enough to deal with any hazards and risks from alternative energy developments, and to achieve sensible risk management. The HSE's report, published today, is in response to a request from Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks for an expert report to the government’s energy review on health and safety issues associated with a range of energy developments, including biofuels, biomass, wind, tidal and nuclear.

Malaysia's Golden Hope plans 390,000-ton biodiesel capacity

Golden Hope Plantations Bhd is planning a total annual production capacity of 390,000 tonnes of biodiesel when it's four planned facilities come on stream. Group Chief Executive Datuk Sabri Ahmad said about USD $68 million  would be invested in the four plants – three in Malaysia and one in Holland.

Novozymes enters development cooperation on biofuel biomass in China

Beginning in August Novozymes and China Resources Alcohol Corporation (CRAC) will enter into a three-year cooperation agreement on research into processes for producing cellulosic-based ethanol - so-called second-generation biofuel - in China.

In connection with the research cooperation with Novozymes, CRAC is setting up a pilot factory for the production of cellulosic based ethanol at Zhaodong in Heilongjiang province, where there is already an ethanol factory, for the Chinese biofuel market among other things. Novozymes is also developing the necessary enzymes for the cellulosic-based ethanol process.

Xethanol progresses in New England regional expansion

Xethanol Corporation and Global Energy and Management have joined forces to form a new venture to develop ethanol production in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. The new entity, known as NewEnglandXethanol plans to open several ethanol plants throughout the region deploying Xethanol's proprietary technologies. Additionally, Xethanol may co-locate biodiesel production in its facilities under Xethanol's sub-license from H2Diesel, Inc.

PetroSun announces formation of Algae BioFuels

PetroSun Drilling Inc. (Pink Sheets: PSUD), an emerging provider of oilfield services to major and independent producers of oil and natural gas, announced today that the company has formed Algae BioFuels Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary. Algae BioFuels will be engaged in the research and development of algae cultivation as an energy source in the production of biodiesel, an economically feasible and eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based transportation fuels. The R&D and production facilities for Algae BioFuels will be based in Arizona and Australia.

UK's D1 welcomes first tanker of biodiesel feedstock at River Tees port

D1 Oils plc, the UK-based producer of biodiesel, has this month received its first tanker shipment of imported vegetable oil for refining at its new Teesside refinery. The shipment of 2,000 tonnes of refined soya oil from Brazil arrived in Teesside on the MV Mamry last week. The soya oil will be refined into biodiesel at D1’s Middlesbrough site, which currently has a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes of biodiesel per year. By year end D1 expects to increase production to 72,000 tonnes, which will require shipments of 6000 tonnes per month.
