Biofuel investors Bioro and Alco BioFuel plan to invest in Europe's largest biodiesel and ethanol production plants in the Gent region of Belgium. Over the next few
months the federal government will decide which municipalities will host these plants.
Tenders for the production of Belgian biofuels have
already been published: http://www.staatsbladclip.be/wetten/2006/06/16/wet-2006003297.html.
Gent Harbour hopes to be granted a large part of the production quota. In
order to make Gent a renewable energy centre, a public-private
cooperation has been set up known as the "Gent Bio-Energy Valley".
Participants include Bioro and Alco Bio Fuel, as well as other
stakeholders such as Oleon, Gent University, Gent Local Authority, Gent Harbour Authority and the Provincial Development Company. Together
they aim to achieve considerable industrial expansion for the town.
Alco
Bio Fuel plans to invest in bioethanol production over the next few
years, which will take place in three phases. The first production line will be ready next year, and by 2010 around 300,000 metric tons of ethanol will
be manufactured per year.
This is sufficient to meet all of Belgium's
ethanol requirements, plus some for export.
Bioro plans to produce 200,000 metric tons of biodiesel
per year in Rodenhuizendok in Gent's canal zone.
This will require
600,000 tons of rapeseed, which will be stored on site by Euro Silo.
Cargill
will process this into rapeseed oil, and Bioro will then convert this
rapeseed oil into biodiesel.
