Over
50 fleets of vehicles totalling 4500 cars and trucks in three nothern Dutch provinces are being
included in an extensive survey of fleet vehicles. The results of the
first 30 fleet surveys were presented yesterday.
Energy
Valley, a Dutch public-private sector alliance for the promotion of biofuels, is studying a total of 4500 company vehicles to see whether it
would be viable to run them on alternative fuels. The
first results show that of the 1100 cars studied so far, 1000 would run just as well on biofuels with little modification.
At a
congress in Leeuwarden 40 northern Dutch entrepreneurs stated that they are willing to convert their fleets to biofuel, provided there
are sufficient refuelling stations in their region and there is no
overall increase in costs.
Using
this survey as a basis, Energy Valley also determined the investment
required to convert the fleets of cars so that they run on sustainable
transport fuels, and which fuels would be the most suitable for a
specific fleet of vehicles.
It would appear that there is considerable
interest in sustainable mobility in the north of the country, from both
industry and the government.
Participants in this project come
from various trade sectors, and include housing corporations, the
national forestry department, Veenstra Transport BV, and Groningen
Seaports.
This survey is an Energy Valley initiative in cooperation with the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, and
Leeuwarden Local Authority.
