Koninklijke Vopak N.V. (Royal Vopak) announces plans to develop a second oil terminal in the Port of Amsterdam. Vopak and the Amsterdam Port Authority recently signed a letter of intent for the rental of a site in Westpoort, in the Afrikahaven Harbour. Earlier this week, Vopak also submitted an EIR (environmental impact report) memorandum to the Noord-Holland Provincial Council.
Vopak will make a final investment decision as soon as the permit procedures have been completed.
The construction of the terminal is expected to commence in mid-2007, with the terminal being taken into operation in stages as from mid-2008.
The terminal will be used mainly for the storage of gasoline, biofuels, gas oil and diesel.
The aim is to create an initial capacity of 720,000 cbm, with potential for expansion to 1,100,000 cbm.
The intended terminal will be used for storing gasoline shipped from Germany, among other countries, and specifically tailoring the product to each market.
Tankers will be used to distribute the gasoline to the United States and other countries which are experiencing increased demand for gasoline.
A growing need for exports to the Asian market is expected in the near future.
In addition, coastal tankers will be deployed to serve the European market.
Vopak hopes the new terminal will enable Amsterdam to further develop as the premier gasoline hub in Northwest Europe, with Vopak’s expertise in the fields of safety, health and environment resulting in a quality presence for customers and staff.
Vopak currently has one terminal in the Port of Amsterdam specialising in the storage and trans-shipment of vessel fuels.
